Mozambique has a seriously amazing coastline. The crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, numerous desert islands, and the sea life makes the fishing and diving amazing! Personally we found that finding the best places wasn’t easy and some of the agents we used over the years have been terrible (really terrible). We were looking for places which provide some privacy in a remote place to relax and so all the activities we love. We ended up finding two places we love and would highly recommend.
Vamizi Island is privately owned island, luxury eco resort and marine conservation centre that brings together luxury relaxation with the ability to help their conservation efforts if you wish. The conservation centre is tucked away so its only there if you want to explore it. The Vamizi Lodge is currently closed for the development of the brand new 5* luxurious lodge which they expect to open in 2018. At the moment their six beautiful Private Villas are on offer and will not disappoint. Wooden villas with thatched roofs, a front veranda, spacious interior with open plan bedroom, wardrobe, ensuite bathroom, large kings beds, drawing room, dining room, lounge (all designed and made from local products) and a private pool or beach, and come staffed with a private chef, host and driver. If you do not want to see another people you don’t have to. When the 5* lodge is completed and the central dining area has been re opened you will get the full experience again.
Having said that, all the usual activities are still on offer: diving, fishing, wellness treatments, yoga, castaway picnics, romantic dinners, and sun down cruises. The conservation team offer guided nature walks, talks and community visits. And if relaxing is your main aim, the sunset cocktail evening on the beach after a wellness treatment will get you in the holiday mood. Meet other guests at the Muntu Nkulu beach bar and discuss what you’ve been up to and which are your favourite adventures. Food is delicious with a modern twist on African dishes and many western dishes on offer if you prefer to keep is simple. Catch your fish in the day and with the fish they will make a dish for you that evening, fresh as it comes!
If diving is your thing we can’t recommend Vamizi enough! The dive centre has excellent equipment, you can even do most of the PADI qualifications there, but the dive sites are AMAZING! The dive site Neptute’s is to this day the best site we have every dived. A deep rock canyon filled with huge groupers, sharks, rays, turtles, bass and more. Fishing is also great, expect to catch big yellow fin tuna, marlin, sailfish, king mackerel, dorado, king fish.
Getting here you’re best to fly to Johannesburg and then take a private plane to Vamizi Island. There used to be regular domestic flights from Pemba but at the moment these have stopped.
Pambele Private Villas
Pambele is a privately owned beach resort on the remote San Sebastian Peninsula in Mozambique. Located on 200 metres of private beachfront the thatched villas are backed onto a private nature reserve and face out over the Bazaruto Marine National Park. The villas have a local flavour as the material and design was done by locals with local materials. The luxury villas sleep 10 adults and 4 children across five villas. With everything you need to relax: central lounge are with huge sofas, bar, dining area, large swimming pool, covered kids pool, office, with each villa having its own small kitchen, living space, king beds, ensuite, veranda and plunge pool. With the option to hire Pambele exclusively it provides ultimate privacy. Fully staffed all your needs will be catered for.
The food is delicious, very fresh and again with an African twist. Breakfast and dinner if a buffet style with hot food ordered as you wish. You can request anything you like before you arrive so they have any specialist products you want stocked for your arrival. Dinner is always up for discussion, but if you aren’t fussy the chef will create something great every evening. And make sure you do a bbq evening!
Activities here are fantastic: fishing, diving, island hopping, sun down cruise, safari in the nature reserve, water sports, kayaking, island picnics and go chase the flamingos!
Transport here is pretty good. Fly via Johannesburg to Vilanculos Airport where you will be collected by Pambele staff and driven to the Pambele Catamaran – Halcyon – where a 40 minute boat ride takes you to your villas (look out for the dolphins on the way!).
